Goal of the Activity:
Introduce students to a creative writing structure which also allows them to practice alphabet/vocabulary relations.
Length of Activity (minutes):
50
Rules/Explanation:

This activity hasn't been tried yet, but if you give it a shot let me know!

For 1年生:
To warm up the students, spell your name vertically on the board. After, point to the first letter and ask students to tell you a word that starts with this letter. When students tell you a word, write it down following the structure "A is for apple." Continue this until each letter has a word assigned to it. When this is finished, explain to the students that they can make acrostic poems by matching words with the letters in their name. Show the students your prepared example one if you have one. This should take 10 min.

For the main activity, hand each student a worksheet. Ask them to spell their name vertically, and then choose words that start with each letter and fill in the sentence. This will be their rough draft and it should take 10 min. Remember to circulate the classroom with your JTE to assist students and to make sure they are working on the activity. If students are struggling to find words, remind them to look at pages 8-11 in their textbooks.

Students who finish the worksheet quickly may flip over to the back to make a final draft if they wish, or they can draw pictures and add colour to the completed draft.

For the last 15-20 mins of class, ask students to make lunch groups. In lunch groups they will present their poem to their classmates.

I'm rarely allowed to split activities over two lessons, but f you can, exand this activity and allow the students time to make a proper final draft of the poem so they can add artwork and design to it. You can show these off on display in the classroom/hallways or make a poetry anthology for the classroom!

Notes:

For higher grade students, make the activity more challenging by asking the students to create "stories" using the letters in their name (see 3年生 Acrostic Name Poem).
For students with less developed writing skills, provide pictures for them to use in place of the words.
Capital letters may appear too harsh for young or special support students, so switching to lower-case may be a better idea.
